CHAPTER SEVEN

HELEN

By evening Helen had finally calmed herself down enough with a glass of wine that she could curl on the couch with one of her books to distract her. She read for hours until she had nearly finished the book she started that day. That is when Jake arrived.

“Hey Jake,” She said as calmly as possible. “How’d things go at work? Did you go into the office?”

“Ummm… yeah, it was…” Jake let out a deep sigh as he looked at his feet. “Lexi broke up with me, I’m pretty sure I just quit my job, and… other weird stuff keeps happening. But I think we need to clear the air between us…”

Helen felt her stomach drop and blurted out, “about last night…”

“Yeah…”

“I know, I’m sorry I was really drunk- I mean not as drunk as you were, and you started touching me, which I don’t blame you for, I tried to stop you bought I should have tried harder and-”

“I know I know, I um… well, I don’t remember everything but I remember enough to know that I share equal blame for us- for what happened,” Jake’s cheek beamed bright red.

“I just think,” Helen continued forward, hoping to end this conversation right. “You know, maybe we can acknowledge what happened and move forward and just like not think or worry about it. You know? Like not make it weird or whatever.”

“Yeah no, yeah, I totally agree,” Jake nodded.

The awkward silence hung between them until they both broke the tension with laughter. I think I’ll have a drink,” Jake laughed grabbing a beer out of the fridge.

“Me too,” Helen said filling her wine glass.

“Just one or two this time,” Jake smiled.

“Agreed,” Helen said as they both went and sat on the couch turning on the TV. They chatted some more about various things but kept the conversation light. After a time the awkwardness wore off as they watched different TV shows and movies. Helen thought, maybe- just maybe, things could return to normal between them.
